Did blacks fight alongside the Confederates against the Yankees during the Civil War? If yes, how were they treated?
Robert E. Lee was in every sense the definition of a Gentleman. He had every right to demand Arlington house and grounds back, there was even a court case years later that stated outright the Government had acted inappropriately. He could have demanded that every single soldier buried there be unearthed at government expense and relocated. He did not. During the war, the house where he courted his wife, Mary Custis, was occupied by Ambrose Burnside as a headquarters. He saw much of his state ravaged by Federal troopers. He fought with every ounce of ingenuity, and cunning at his disposal, and if you see his pictures at the beginning of the war, and the end of the war, it aged him. In the end his army was utterly broken. Very rarely in history has an army been so thoroughly beaten (the 6th Army at Stalingrad was actually in better shape when t surrendered than the Army of Northern Virginia, though t’d suffer a far worse fate). He picked up himself and his family and tried to rebuild his life. He could have written memoirs, like Grant, and maybe “clear the record” (which Grant failed to do). He refrained from discussing the mistakes of the past which might have sought to enflame animosities like J.E. Johnston did. In the end R.E. Lee did the gentlemanly thing and accepted his defeat no matter how bitter it might be. When he took the head of Washington College he was generous with his time, and very clear with firebrands that t had fought, and bravely, and suffered mightily for it. He always admonished such young men to do what is best for “their country.” It’s clear that he never totally let go of the war. Reportedly his last words were “Tell Hill he must come up. . . now strike the tent.” Lee was a man of deep feeling and you can tell that if you ever read Shelby Foote’s Civil War. a narrative (just a heads up the audiobooks for his three volumes are 43 hours, 53 hours, and 58 hours respectively so it’s not easy to get through). Lee was a good man fighting on the wrong side, and the greatest tragedy (I’m using this in the Greek theatrical sense) is that such a man should fall so far. Still, that he could maintain his dignity right up until the end should be a lesson we all could learn.

Erase PDF: All You Need to Know
It is a sad thing to lose a leader, but there was another great lesson he taught to his country. The greatest tragedy of the nation at large is that the majority of its citizens are morally, intellectually, and intellectually inferior to their leaders. The only way to fix this is that we must make our leaders as good as they can be, and then watch as their people come to them. The next step in this process of education is we must take to make every soldier, sailor, and airman better than he would have been under any other circumstance. And so today is Memorial Day, and it should be a day to honor our fallen comrades, and to take the next step down the path of education and moral improvement. We should remember them, and honor their sacrifices. For the rest of the year I will be.
